N. Carlos J solo activation "A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN" illustrates memories of chasing dreams while growing up in Brooklyn, New York, in the late 80's and early 90's.
Our lives are like trees. A tree goes through several stages in its life cycle as it grows, similar to a human being. Every leaf from a tree is like a dream, and when the leaves fall, dreams disappear. However, when the tree grows new leaves, life creates wonderful new opportunities.
N. Carlos J.'s solo activation "A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN" illustrates memories of chasing dreams, while growing up in Brooklyn, New York, in the late 80’s and early 90’s
A nostalgic time in NEW YORK CITY was exciting and romantic. Rent was relatively cheap, the blistering hot summers felt endless, and the streets were bustling with life, attitude, and creativity. Cell phones didn't exist, and people met up for the simple fact of doing nothing. What a time to be ALIVE!
Carlos introduces many mediums, one of which is heavy-body acrylic paint. His application of saturated hues tells the story of each piece, as he believes colors convey a strong feeling of emotion. The colors in the paintings in this exhibition were selected by his desire to emit a euphoric vibe created from his memories of a golden era.
Each subject matter's expressive figures were carefully chosen to share in the symbolicalness of growth and the everyday people who lived in this Golden Era, which produced many great culturally defining moments.

N. Carlos J. is a painter, designer, and muralist who employs painting, illustration, and drawing elements within his works. With a degree in Fine Arts and a background in mural painting, his works ranges from smaller multiples to large-scale murals in public forums. He began his studies in fine arts at the High School of Art and Design and continued at the Fashion Institute of Technology, where he received his BFA.
N. Carlos J.'s work explores our human emotions, the language of the soul, and the rebirth of our childlike state in adulthood. His work also sheds light on the subconscious conversations we, as humans, have behind the masks we wear. He disconnects the painted image from the common experience and perception of the viewer to enable the creation of new figurations and experiences. To create these complex images, he blurs the lines between the imposed disciplines of the art world, such as painting, illustration, and drawing, to disrupt the concepts of what is considered high and low-brow art.
