In a world overwhelmed by implicit bias, Guy Stanley Philoche’s “Give Us Our Flowers” children’s series offers a refreshing source of solace.
As you look at these children, you see reflections of your own childhood and the essence of who you are. From the girl savoring a melting ice cream cone to the little boy proudly dressed in a suit and tie, each piece captures the beauty of innocence and aspiration. Through this series, Philoche dismantles the barriers that divide us, nurturing a sense of belonging and pride in our shared humanity. These children act as mirrors, inviting us to reconnect with our past selves and providing a pathway to healing. They embody trust and optimism, encouraging us to dream of a safer, kinder, and more loving tomorrow.

While remaining true to my voice and mastering my craftsmanship, the “Invisible” series is a reflection of history by examining Black identity, invisibility and hyper-visibility in America. The revolution of the Black Power movement serves as the foundation of my monochromatic black on black mixed-media works. My work embodies the evolution of graffiti in my creative process, utilizing urban media techniques to blend street expressionism with historical insight. Through this series, I aim to ignite a thought-provoking dialogue about the complex facets of the Black experience of not being seen or remembered for their contributions and influence in society. The figures depicted strike a delicate balance, evoking feelings of reflection and comfort, instilling a sense of familiarity, and creating an urgency for a better future.
