Guy Stanley Philoche closes out the curation with “This Is America” from his “GIVE US OUR FLOWERS” series adeptly providing the period at the end of this curatorial statement. With the subject standing feet shoulder width apart, “ten toes down” solid in his stance, unmoving, unwavering, here we can see the theme of childhood tenacity and stubbornness. The greyscale tone invoking a spirit of melancholy, the oversized shirt on the frame of this young black boy perhaps pointing to the adultification of young black males before they get to experience their childhood. The “AMERICA” is painted upside down, mirroring what it means to be from different sides of the same coin, or country…Guy Stanley Philoche adds his tagline “POST NO BILLS” at the top right corner of the canvas, as the bottom of the canvas bestows upon the subject their flowers.

Gregory Saint Amand “PLAYTIME” series starts us on track with the portrait of a young man’s determination filling the canvas in his piece “DRIVEN”. Deep-set irises stare past the audience as if we’re in the way of his destination. The subject’s stare dares us to stop him- as if it were possible. The youth and tenacity etched in this piece reminds the viewer of the desire to achieve goals and dreams bigger than ourselves, with the affirmation that nothing will get in our way. Painted on cardboard, the greyscale subject is made to stand out against the vibrancy of the HOT WHEELS logo emblazoned across the canvas. This work captures an effervescent energy that can only be executed by Gregory Saint Amand.

King Saladeen is represented through his piece “Faith Over Fear”. This is a mixed media work on canvas, pulled from his “FACES OF SUCCE$$” series. The multilayered mediums that work in harmony and simultaneous dissonance peel back the layers of this shared human experience we navigate. Neon colors synonymous with the highest of euphoric highs, dots of pink, large aquamarine highlighting the subject’s face, these all narrate when life seems to be carrying us to our peaks, yet it is smartly juxtaposed against a dark abysmal black background. No matter our external environment, our memories and experiences tether us to the hope that there is in fact more to see, and further to go.
